Overview Compare Direct Ferry Separate Tickets How to get from Lombok to Nusa Penida by Ferry Most travellers visit Nusa Penida from Bali, but that doesn’t mean it’s your only option. You can also reach Nusa Penida from its neighbouring island Lombok. As the distance between Bali and Nusa Penida is shorter compared to the distance from Lombok, all ferries to Nusa Penida will make a stop in Bali. This will make the journey time a bit longer, but at least you can make the trip in one go. When travelling the 86 km distance from Lombok to Nusa Penida, you have 2 options. You can book a direct ferry with a short stopover in Bali 2-3 hours or book two separate tickets 2-4 hours excl. transfers. Fares start from $ 290,000 IDR and $ 340,000 IDR, respectively. Booking a direct ferry ticket is the most convenient way to travel from Lombok to Nusa Penida. The ferry still makes a short stop in Bali, but you can conveniently stay on the boat. The total ferry ride takes hours with tickets starting from $ 290,000 IDR. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, there were fast ferries operating the Bali-Gili Islands-Lombok-Nusa Penida route. However, these ferries haven’t resumed operations since the pandemic. Besides the common fast ferries, there is also the “KMP Nusa Jaya Abadi” ferry which is a direct roll-on, roll-off ferry from Lombok to Nusa Penida. It’s a slow ferry used by people with vehicles and locals travelling with goods. However, we don’t recommend this slow ferry for the regular traveller because of its inconsistent schedule and longer travel time. Short stop in Bali before continuing to Nusa Penida Even though it’s called a “direct ferry,” the ferries actually make a stop in Padang Bai in Bali. Luckily, you can just stay on the boat while some passengers will disembark here and new travellers from Bali will board. After this stop, it’s only a 30-minute ferry ride to Nusa Penida. The total travel time from Lombok to Nusa Penida is hours and tickets for this combined journey start from $ 290,000 IDR. More ferries are now available on the Lombok to Nusa Penida route with departure times between 1000 and 1330. Pre-pandemic situation Before the pandemic, there used to be more options, with travel times between hours between Lombok and Nusa Penida. These ferry companies included Eka Jaya, Golden Crown, and Gili Getaway. Although most of these companies already resumed their operations between Bali and Gili Islands, they haven’t resumed their operations for this route yet. Departure ports in Lombok Departure ports in Lombok Ferries used to depart from the two main piers in Lombok Bangsal Pier and Senggigi Pier. Both ports are located on the island’s west coast, but Senggigi Pier is more centrally located. Bangsal Pier is located in the northern part of the island and is closer to the Gili Islands. The last time we checked December 2022, all direct ferries operate from this pier. From Senggigi, it’s a 30-40 minute drive up north to Bangsal Pier. From Kuta, Lombok, it’s about a 2-hour drive north. Jump to this section to find out how to get to Bangsal Pier. Senggigi Ferry Terminal is more accessible if you are staying in Senggigi Rinjani basecamp or the most popular part of Lombok, Kuta, in the southern part of the island. Arrival ports in Nusa Penida Arrival ports in Nusa Penida In Nusa Penida, there are several piers, all located in the northern part of the island. The largest pier is Buyuk Harbour on the northeast, where Semaya One, Caspla Bali Sea View, Invinia Fast Boat, and Wijaya Buyuk arrive at. Starfish and Golden Queen fast boats arrive at Banjar Nyuh Harbour on the northwest coast. These two harbours are a 20-minute drive away from each other. Taxi fares between these harbours start from $10 150,000 IDR. Ferry schedule from Lombok to Nusa Penida Check Ferry Tickets If the direct ferries are fully booked, you can still take the indirect ferry. With this ferry, you will need to get off the boat in Bali and take another ferry to Nusa Penida. Buying the tickets separately will cost at least $ 425,000 IDR which is a bit more expensive than buying a direct ticket. Total travel time is also hours, but this doesn’t include yet the waiting time between the ferry trips. Via Padang Bai or Sanur? From Lombok, you can either take the ferry to Padang Bai or Sanur. We recommend taking the ferry to Padang Bai as this is the closest harbour to Lombok. This ferry ride takes only about hours. Just note that you need to take any of the earliest trips to make it in time for the connecting ferry that departs at 1430. From Sanur, there are more departures to Nusa Penida, but the problem here is that there are only two departures from Lombok to Sanur. Both these ferries arrive at 1630 in Sanur, which also leaves you with only one option for the connecting ferry. If the ferry schedules don’t match, you can also take a taxi from Padang Bai to Sanur. This leaves you with the most departure options from Lombok to Bali, as well as the most departure times from Bali to Nusa Penida. Note that Sanur opened a new port. It’s one of the most modern ports you’ll find in Southeast Asia and all boats now conveniently depart and arrive from a pier instead of from the beach. This new port is about a 5-10 minute walk from the old port. Via Serangan Pier Note that there is also an afternoon ferry trip from Lombok to Serangan Pier in Bali, but the connecting ferry from Serangan to Nusa Penida departs in the early morning. This means you’ll have to stay the night in Bali when travelling via Serangan. Step 1 Lombok to Bali by Ferry Below, you’ll find the ferry schedules from Lombok to Padang Bai and Sanur. We recommend booking a ferry with at least hours of spare time between the arrival from Lombok to Bali and the departure to Nusa Penida. Almost all ferries from Lombok to Bali depart from Bangsal Pier in north Lombok. Jump to this section to find out how to get to Bangsal Pier The only exception is the ferry departing from Senggigi to Bali at 1030, operated by Eka Jaya. This port is more convenient for most travellers staying in Lombok, and you have ample time before the next ferry trip from Padang Bai to Nusa Penida. Ferry schedule from Lombok to Padang Bai Ferry schedule from Lombok to Sanur Note that the new port in Sanur has a digital ticketing system, so you are required to buy your tickets online in advance. Your ticket or boarding pass includes a barcode that will be scanned and checked at the port. Step 2 Bali to Nusa Penida by Ferry While most ferries from Lombok to Bali arrive at Padang Bai, only one ferry company operates from Padang Bai to Nusa Penida. Travel time is about an hour from this port. You have more choices if you take a ferry to Sanur Port. From this port, Nusa Penida is just 30-45 minutes away. Ferry tickets start from $6 95,000 IDR. Ferry schedule from Padang Bai to Nusa Penida Ferry schedule from Sanur to Nusa Penida Arrival ports in Nusa Penida Arrival ports in Nusa Penida Unlike the direct ferries from Lombok to Nusa Penida, most of the ferries arrive at Banjar Nyuh Harbour. Only two ferries head to Buyuk Harbour. See here the ferries on this route and the ports in Nusa Penida that they arrive at Banjar Nyuh Harbour northwest coast El Rey Junior Fast Cruise, Starfish Fast Boat, Axe Stone Fast Cruise, Angel Billabong, Idola Express Buyuk Harbour northeast coast Semaya One, Caspla Bali Sea View For more details on this last leg of the journey, check out our specific route guide about the ferries from Bali to Nusa Penida. Check Ferry Tickets How to get to Bangsal Pier in Lombok Bangsal Pier is a small pier, located in the North of Lombok. It’s the main gateway from Lombok to the Gili Islands, as well as a common stopover for boats servicing the Nusa Penida – Bali – Lombok – Gili route. From Senggigi Pier The easiest way to reach Bangsal Pier from your accommodation in Senggigi is by taxi. Taxi fares start at $ 115,000 IDR when coming from Senggigi and the journey takes approximately 30 minutes along the scenic coastal road. Bluebird is the most reliable taxi company and can be flagged down in the street or booked by phone 0370 627000 or via a dedicated app. Another option is to ask your hotel if they offer shared rides to Bangsal Pier. This will help save a few dollars, although the travel time will likely take a little longer. From Kuta in South Lombok From Kuta, there are no metered taxis such as BlueBird, but there are plenty of tour desks that can arrange a taxi. You can also simply inquire at your accommodation for a taxi. Most taxis can accommodate up to four passengers, while larger cars or vans are available on request. Expect to pay at least $27 400,000 IDR for this 2-hour journey to Bangsal Pier. Renting a bike in Nusa Penida If you plan on exploring the island by motorbike, you can easily find motorbike rentals outside the pier. There is much to see on Nusa Penida and one of the best ways to explore the island is by motorbike. Bike rental in Nusa Penida normally starts from $5 75,000 IDR. If you want to book in advance, you can rent via Klook for $ 85,000 IDR per day. If you book via Klook, you can already start your journey at the harbour because the renter will wait for you there with your bike. No need to queue up or negotiate for the best rates. It’s basically a no-brainer if you plan to rent a bike. It goes without saying that a valid driver’s license is still required and you should be comfortable driving a bike. Toreach Nusa Penida, there are many options like normal Boat, speed Boat from Bali. Normal Boat will take 3-4 hours depending on weather condition and waves. It will cost you only Rp 35.000 (Approx. Rs. 175.00) but I will recommend to choose Speed Boat over normal boat, as it is safer option and it takes only 30-40 min to reach Nusa Penida.
Lombok is an island in Indonesia located east of Bali. Although less famous than Bali, Lombok has a lot to offer in terms of natural landscapes, local culture, and outdoor activities. We also explain how to get to Lombok from Gili IslandsThe Gili Islands are a group of three small islands off the northwest coast of Lombok. The Gilis are famous for their white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and coral Trawangan is the largest and most developed island of the three. The hotel itself is very new and doesn’t have much charm, but it’s located on a nice beach. Right next to it is the Novotel, which is older but has a more charming restaurant. Both hotels are also located right next to the Mandalika circuit, which has hosted the Indonesian Moto Grand Prix since 2022. On a future trip, I will probably try the Sikara Lombok Hotel. The ferry from Nusa Penida to Lombok departs regularly according to the schedule. We recommend booking your ferry ticket in advance, especially if you plan to travel during the high season or long weekends and national holidays. Book online to avoid long waiting queues at the pier and ensure your trip goes as planned. While ferry travel may be a real trial for those prone to motion sickness, quite often, it is the only way to reach some of the best island destinations, so get prepared and embark on your adventure! How far is Nusa Penida from Lombok? If you choose to travel from Nusa Penida to Lombok by ferry, you will have to cover 263 long does it take to get from Nusa Penida to Lombok by ferry? The duration of your ferry travel from Nusa Penida to Lombok should be within 2h 15m – 5h 15m range. It may depend on the type of the ship – fast or slow, the route – direct or calling to other piers enroute, and the weather conditions – rains and winds are not the best friends for ferries. Do expect delays or trip cancellations if the weather is stormy or your travel falls on off-season or shoulder season. It is highly advisable not to plan tight onward connections after your ferry trips – even if the weather is good, delays are possible as the sea is always much does it cost to get from Nusa Penida to Lombok by ferry? The Nusa Penida – Lombok route is served by the following operators . There are differently priced tickets, and the cheapest one is only . The most expensive one will set you back . Before you buy your ticket, make sure you understand what your fare includes as there may be different luggage allowances, seat classes, and extras – water, snacks, by ferry essentials We do recommend buying your ferry tickets in advance, especially if your route is served by smaller vessels that offer a limited number of daily departures. To book in advance is of primary importance not only during the high season but off-season, too. Sometimes it is ok to show up at the pier and hop on the next ferry but remember that this is not possible for any destination, and you may end up waiting for hours for the next departure and to have to change your travel plans. Shipping is highly dependent on weather conditions. It mostly refers to the open sea routes, between the destinations in the open sea and the coast as well as between the islands scattered in the sea. If the waves are high, even the islands which sit closest to the shore are often cut off from the continent – all vessels may be ordered to remain in the harbor. So do keep in mind that during stormy weather, delays and cancellations may occur. Strong winds and heavy rains may interfere with your sea journey, too. So take it into consideration while making your travel plans. Very often, a more expensive fare means less time spent on board, though the difference in price also may be due to the different cabin classes. Always check how long your trip lasts – it may be worth paying extra to cut your travel time to an hour instead of three, right? Travel time can be crucial if you are prone to seasickness, so choosing the cheapest ferry ticket is not always a good idea. Speedboats bring you to the destination in the shortest time possible, while fast catamarans are also a decent choice, often taking only slightly more time. On some routes, slower and sometimes overnight ships are available, proving a prudent option if you are ready to spend a night on board. It actually allows you to save some bucks in your pocket that you would have otherwise spent on a hotel room. Yet again – longer ferry trips are not for everyone. If you are prone to seasickness, take medicine half an hour before you board your ferry, not when you have already started feeling nausea – this way it will not help. Opt for staying on the open deck with a fresh breeze blowing into your face wherever possible. On vessels with several decks, the lower one normally feels more stable, while the upper one often is more of a rock-n-roll type. A rule of thumb, choose bigger and more stable car ferries or high-speed boats if you suffer from rough seas. The former feels very steady even when stormy, and the latter is fast. Avoid catamaran-like ferries as they ride the wave rather than cut through it – which means constant ups and downs, ups and downs, OMG. If you happen to choose a catamaran, do follow our recommendation above. Ferry is often not the only way to travel between certain destinations. It is obviously more scenic but usually pricier and may take much longer than if opting for a flight or a bus ride. Before you go, check if your island destination is connected to the mainland with a bridge – many islands which are located close to the shore, in fact, are. Always put on your life jacket. Regulations around the world differ greatly and, in some countries, are more relaxed than in others. Anyway, almost everywhere, passengers are supposed to wear their life vests. If you are not provided with one, do not hesitate to ask where they are located. Note that piers at some destinations collect a special pier fee’ from all arriving passengers. As a rule, this fee is not included in your ticket price and should be paid on arrival. Reading other travellers’ reviews is the best way to get an idea of what to expect from your ferry trip. Do check their experience to get the most out of your sea journey. Indonesia 🚢 Nusa Penida Lombok
